When people think of police dogs they usually think big German Shepherds that are trained to attack. That is not a true picture of all today’s police dog. While it is true that some police dogs are still trained to be aggressive it is on the handlers’ command. Some police departments do not have the need for this type of dog. Using this type of dog, narcotic detection and tracking along with good public relations will help to eliminate the common misconceptions about police dogs and what they do. Simultaneously it gives police departments a better advantage on the criminal. The public confidence that its police department is using modern and innovative techniques in dealing with today’s problems. Some police department K-9 dogs will only be trained to be narcotic detection, (tracking) and obedient and would have no training in aggression. Police K-9 could be used at public demonstration such as neighborhood meetings, church groups, social and business clubs, schools and scouting events etc. here, the handler can demonstrate the dog’s abilities, possibly with a slide or video presentation and answer questions. This would allow the public to get to know their police department with better knowledge and understanding of it and the K-9 unit’s role.
